Imagine that you had it all! And then in an instant you had nothing, adding to that, you didn’t even know or understand how it all happened!
During my time of having it all, I had the privilege of touring the world at the age of fifteen. Because I was a valedictorian in high school, I received a golf scholarship to the prestigious Stanford University. Being at Stanford was amazing, and the wide scope of opportunity was readily available to me. For instance, while I attended Stanford, I attended the Olympic games again. I had attended earlier in 1984. My best friend competed at the age of 16 that year and I thoroughly enjoyed watching the competition of the finest athletes in the world. It turned out that my interest in music stretched me to become the best DJ on my college campus. I knew lots of students, and was quite popular in the music scene. Because of my grade point average, and my scholastic abilities, I would have my choice to attend any of the top ten medical schools in the country. I was at the top and taking advantage of all the opportunities it afforded me.
Then suddenly, I woke up and found myself in handcuffs. The arrest paperwork stated that I was a danger to others and myself. I was gravely disabled. I could not fully grasp the gap between the top and the bottom – scholarships to handcuffs. So I asked myself, “How did this happen?”
Mental illness effects one out of every five Americans. It affects 20% of children and 450 million teens and adults worldwide. The different categories include addiction, ADHD, anxiety, autism, bipolar, borderline personality, depression, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive, post-traumatic stress, schizophrenia, and general mental illness.
Dr. Johnson lives with his wife and children in Los Angeles, CA. He currently holds a position in medical technology for one of the Nation's top facilities.
